6. Neutral-Grip Lat Pulldown

6. Neutral-Grip Lat Pulldown

B. Before You Start

Equipment Setup:

Attach neutral close-grip parallel bar handle to top pulley.

Seat Adjustment:

Adjust thigh pad roller height so your thighs are locked down firmly.

Posture Alignment:

Chest open, slight 10-degree lean backward at hips.

Foot Placement:

Feet flat on floor, thighs wedged securely under pads.

C. Starting Position

  1. Reach up and grip the neutral parallel handle.
  2. Sit down smoothly and wedge your thighs beneath the padded thigh rollers.
  3. Keep feet flat on the floor.
  4. Tilt torso back slightly (~10 degrees) with chest lifted toward the ceiling.

D. Movement Steps

  1. Exhale as you pull the handle down toward your upper chest.
  2. Lead the movement with your elbows, pulling them down toward your side ribs.
  3. Squeeze your lats and shoulder blades at the bottom position.
  4. Inhale as you slowly control the handle back up until arms extend fully.

Breathing

Exhale while pulling the bar down. Inhale as the bar returns smoothly upward.

Tempo

2 seconds pull down, 1 second hold at chest, 3 seconds controlled return.

Range of Motion

Pull until handle reaches collarbone height; extend arms overhead without shrugging shoulders.

Prescription

2 sets • 10-15 reps

RPE 5-6

I. What You Should Feel

Working Muscles

Muscles under armpits (lats) and front of upper arms.

Normal Effort

Smooth pulling effort across upper sides of back.

Should NOT Feel

No neck strain or shoulder joint pinching.

J. Common Mistakes

Pulling Behind the Neck

Pulling the bar down behind the head putting severe stress on cervical spine.

💡 Coaching Cue: Always pull the bar down in front to collarbone level.
